Advocacy

Support Matters

For over 40 years, Luis A. Miranda, Jr. and Dr. Luz Towns-Miranda have championed community activism, viewing philanthropy as a three-pronged approach through giving, fundraising, and advocacy efforts. Along with Luz Miranda-Crespo, Lin-Manuel, Miguel Towns, and their respective spouses, Luis Crespo and Vanessa Nadal, they have created and supported institutions focused on underserved populations in Upper Manhattan, communities throughout NYC, across the country, and in Puerto Rico.

Increasing Diversity
in Theater and Film

As a family, we believe two things to be true: 1) society is strongest when we listen to a diverse array of voices, and 2) that we, as a family and as a society, can amplify these historically underrepresented voices by funding, supporting, and nurturing these voices.

Through the Miranda Family Fellowship, we collaborate with partner organizations to discover emerging artists and young professionals who lack the connections or ability to take unpaid work that traditionally affords access to the entertainment industry. Our two-year professional development and training program is designed to cultivate their careers.

Closer to home, in New York City, our family is focused on strengthening the arts in our uptown neighborhoods of Washington Heights and Inwood by giving grants to local organizations that offer access to arts education to children and teens. Some of our notable grantees include: Belongó, the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA), and Jazz Power Initiative.

Puerto Rico Relief
+ Recovery Efforts

The Mirandas have tirelessly supported relief efforts in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria in September 2017. Through the Hispanic Federation’s UNIDOS Disaster Relief and Recovery Program, the family has helped raise over $45 million for relief and rebuilding efforts on the island.

In honor of the historic 2019 run of HAMILTON in Puerto Rico, the Miranda Family, the producers of HAMILTON, and the Flamboyan Foundation partnered to create the Flamboyan Arts Fund, raising $15 million for arts and culture on the island. As of October 2019, over $8M has been awarded to 47 organizations.

Among other initiatives, the Mirandas partnered with the Hispanic Federation, Starbucks, Nespresso, Fundación Colibrí, and the Rockefeller Foundation to help revitalize the island’s storm-battered coffee industry.

In partnership with Google, Google Arts & Culture, the Flamboyan Arts Fund, and a select group of museums and cultural institutions in Puerto Rico, the family also seeks to increase the visibility of Puerto Rican Art through Google Arts & Culture’s innovative online platform.

The family has also utilized their own fundraising and advocacy efforts to ensure that candidates of color are represented up and down the ballot.

Attention to Critical Issues
in the U.S.

In order to make a deep impact when there are so many critical issues to tackle, the family has chosen to focus on threats to reproductive healthcare, immigration, gun violence, and the global climate crisis. Most recently, they have focused on relief efforts for the COVID-19 pandemic.

Attention to Critical Issues
in the U.S.

As the United States continues to face rising challenges, the Mirandas remain attentive to both new and shifting crises that call for immediate attention and aid. They will continue supporting and lifting up these critical efforts across the country.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the producers of HAMILTON, and the Miranda Family partnered to create the Hamilton Education Program (AKA #EduHam). Over the first five years, 250,000 Title I high school students throughout the country will have participated in the innovative history curriculum which culminates with a HAMILTON matinee. In 2020, the program is expanding to middle and high school students as #EduHamOnline and will be free to any school which registers.
